Our Founder
Dr. Lucius D. Hill
Pioneer in thoracic surgery and founder of the Ryan Hill Research Foundation
A Visionary Surgeon
Dr. Lucius D. Hill was a Seattle thoracic and vascular surgeon who dedicated his career to developing new surgical techniques to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from heartburn symptoms (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD), esophageal cancer, and lung cancer.
In 1976, Dr. Hill established the Ryan Hill Research Foundation with a singular vision: to create a vehicle for doctors to conduct scientific research free from institutional, governmental, and corporate control. This principle of research independence continues as a cardinal tenet of the Foundation.
Scientific Legacy
Dr. Hill's most significant contribution was the identification of the gastroesophageal flap valve, a discovery made in collaboration with Foundation-sponsored researchers. This finding is now documented in both Dorland's Medical Dictionary and Gray's Anatomy — two of the most authoritative references in medical science.
The grading system for gastroesophageal flap valve competence developed by Dr. Hill and his team is widely accepted and used by gastroenterologists worldwide, shaping clinical practice across the discipline.
Dr. Hill also pioneered the Hill repair, an anti-reflux surgical technique that remains a benchmark procedure studied and referenced in thoracic surgery programs globally.
Enduring Vision
Since its founding, the Ryan Hill Research Foundation has funded over 100 peer-reviewed publications and trained research fellows from nine countries: Australia, Canada, Chile, England, Germany, Mexico, Scotland, Sweden, and the United States.
Dr. Hill's vision of independent medical research — free from external pressures — continues to guide every fellowship, every grant, and every study the Foundation supports. Previous Ryan Hill Fellows now occupy some of the most prestigious clinical and academic positions in national and international medical institutions.
